Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) are special schools established by the Government of India under the National Education Policy of 1986. Navodaya Vidyalayas objective is to provide free quality education to talented students, especially from rural areas. JNVs schools are available in 27 States and 8 Union Territories, under the Ministry of Education. Navodaya schools are run by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, JNV gives a chance to students to get admission in the 6th & 9th classes by conducting the JNVST exam. Approximately 28 - 30 lakh students apply for the JNVST exam every year to secure their seats in Navodaya Vidyalaya. All students are eligible to access free education from Class 6 to Class 8. It includes boarding, lodging, uniforms, and textbooks. However, Class 9 to 12 students will have to pay ₹600 per month as Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi (VVN). This fee does not apply to SC/ST students, girls, students with disabilities (Divyang), or those who are from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. The Government employees' children (who are not in the exempted category), they will have to pay ₹1500 per month or the actual Children Education Allowance received by the parent per month, whichever is less. But the minimum amount they have to pay is ₹600 per month. The main objective of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) is to provide good quality & education to talented students, especially from rural areas. Along with good quality studies, JNVs also focus on teaching moral values, culture, environmental awareness, sports, and adventure activities to sharpen the students' minds and make them creative. Students in JNVs are encouraged to learn three languages properly. To promote national unity, JNVs give students a chance to study in other states. For example, they sent Hindi-speaking students to non-Hindi-speaking areas and non-Hindi-speaking students to Hindi-speaking areas. JNVs also help improve school education in their district by sharing their ideas and resources with other nearby schools.
