Navodaya Class 6 Syllabus Subject-Wise
The Navodaya Vidyalaya exam syllabus pattern is divided into three sections, and that covers the following sequence in which the marking pattern is decided. The sections are as follows:
Mental Ability Test (MAT)
This section of the JNVST exam is specifically designed to assess a student's reasoning ability, rational thinking, and problem-solving skills. It includes questions based on figures, patterns, series completion, analogies, embedded figures, and coding and decoding.
These questions test how well a student can analyse visual information, recognise relationships, and apply logic to arrive at the correct answer. To get a handle on this section, students should practice visual reasoning puzzles regularly, as consistency helps build speed and accuracy over time.
Arithmetic Test
This section assesses the student's understanding of basic mathematical concepts taught through class 5. It covers a variety of topics, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, time, distance, measurement, and word problems. It focuses on both accuracy and the ability to apply concepts to real-life situations.
Regular practice using NCERT Class 5 Mathematics textbooks and solving sample questions can be a great help in strengthening this area. Sessions that are time-based are also beneficial in improving speed and confidence during the exam.
Language Test
This section assesses the student's reading
comprehension, vocabulary, and overall language proficiency. This section
typically includes a passage followed by questions to check understanding,
along with grammar-based questions such as fill-in-the-blank exercises,
synonyms, antonyms, sentence rearrangements, and punctuation exercises.
Building a habit of daily reading, such as
storybooks, newspapers, or children's magazines, can enhance vocabulary and
comprehension skills. Students should also focus on learning new words daily
and practising their use in sentences to build a strong foundation in
languages.
The standard 6 JNVST paper consists of a Total of 100 marks, which is further categorized into three sections as mentioned above. The Navodaya Vidyalaya Exam duration is 2 hours, and the medium of instruction is Hindi, English & Regional Language. Another point to note is that there is no negative marking in the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Exams.

Navodaya Class 9 Syllabus Subject-Wise
The JNVST exam for the 9th Class will
be conducted in February 2026, with
the announcement of the Navodaya. Students should approach their preparation
with a focused mindset. Students must focus on obtaining the latest NVS Class 9
syllabus, as this will help them effectively target their studies and
prioritize essential topics. The JNVST Class 9 entrance exam syllabus is
divided into three categories, which are as follows:
1) Science:
Science in Class 9 is divided into three major branches, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, each offering a strong conceptual base. In Physics, students explore topics such as motion, Force, Laws of Motion, Gravitation, Work and Energy, and Sound. Chemistry covers Matter in Our Surroundings, including whether matter around us is pure, Atoms and Molecules, and the Structure of the Atom.
Biology encompasses fundamental units of Life (cells), Tissues, Diversity in Living Organisms, and Natural Resources. The subject is a blend of theory and practical understanding, with hands-on lab experiments playing a key role in the learning process. Students should focus on understanding core concepts, drawing diagrams accurately, writing clear explanations, and applying scientific principles to real-life scenarios.
2) Mathematics:
Class 9 Mathematics forms the foundation for high-school-level problem-solving and logical thinking. The syllabus is designed around key concepts, including Number Systems, Polynomials, Linear Equations in Two Variables, Coordinate Geometry, Geometry (with a focus on Triangles, Lines, Angles, and Circles), Mensuration (with an emphasis on Areas and Volumes), Statistics, and Probability.
Students are expected to understand not just formulas but also the logic behind them. Problem-solving practice, conceptual clarity, and regular revision are crucial to mastering math. Working out NCERT questions, solving sample papers, and attempting higher-order thinking questions can significantly boost performance.
3) English:
In Class 9 English, students work on strengthening their language and literary understanding. The curriculum typically includes Beehive (main reader) and Moments (supplementary reader) books, which feature a variety of short stories, poems, and essays by both Indian and international authors.
These texts help students build interpretation skills, literary appreciation, and moral values. The language component encompasses grammar (tenses, modals, clauses, reported speech, etc.), vocabulary, and writing tasks such as descriptive paragraphs, diary entries, and story writing.
Reading comprehension and listening/speaking practice are also key. To excel, students should focus on reading regularly, practising grammar exercises, and engaging in interactive communication.
4) Hindi:
Class 9 Hindi focuses on enhancing a student's ability to understand and appreciate the richness of the Hindi language. The syllabus features a balanced mix of prose, poetry, and supplementary reading, complemented by instruction in grammar and writing skills.
Students explore the works of celebrated writers and poets, which help in developing comprehension, expression, and critical thinking. Alongside literature, emphasis is also given to grammar topics like समास, उपसर्ग-प्रत्यय, वाक्य शुद्धि, and creative writing such as निबंध, पत्र लेखन, संवाद लेखन, and अनुच्छेद. Regular reading, vocabulary practice, and writing exercises are essential for a strong command of the language.
The standard 9 JNVST paper consists of a Total of 100 marks, which is further categorized into three sections as mentioned above. The Navodaya Vidyalaya Exam duration is 2.5 hours, and the medium of instruction is Hindi, English & Regional Language. Another point to note is that there is no negative marking in the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Exams.
