What Is an Adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun. It tells us more about a person, place, animal, or thing. In simple words, an adjective adds meaning to a sentence. The Examples are as follows:

  • Parul has a red bag.

  • The tall boy is my friend.

  • We saw three t-shirts.

  • This is a beautiful garden.

In these examples, the bold words are adjectives. They tell us more about the nouns. Therefore, learning adjectives is important for students who want to improve their grammar and prepare for the Sainik School entrance exam.

Types of Adjectives for Class 6

There are different types of adjectives. Each type gives us a different kind of information.

1. Adjectives of Quality: These adjectives tell us what a person or thing is like. They describe its nature, size, shape, or colour. The Examples are as follows:

  • Rahul is a kind boy.

  • She has a blue dress.

  • It is a small house.

  • The mango is sweet.

At the end, adjectives of quality help us describe people and things.

2. Adjectives of Quantity: These adjectives tell us how much of something there is. They are often used with things we cannot count one by one. The Examples are as follows:

  • I have some water.

  • There is little milk in the glass.

  • She has enough food.

  • We need more time.

Remember, there are words such as some, little, enough, and much can show quantity.

3.  Adjectives of Number: These adjectives tell us how many people or things there are. They can also show the order of people or things. The Examples are as follows:

  • I have five pencils.

  • Many students joined the class.

  • She stood in the first row.

  • Several birds sat on the tree.

In short, adjectives of number answer questions such as “How many?” and “Which one in order?”

4. Demonstrative Adjectives: These adjectives point to particular people or things. The main words are “this”, “that”, “these”, and “those”. The Examples are as follows:

  • This book is mine.

  • That house is large.

  • These apples are fresh.

  • Those boys are playing.

Use “this” and “that” for one person or thing. On the other hand, use “these” and “those” for more than one.

5. Possessive Adjectives: Possessive adjectives show who owns something. They are “my,” “your,” “his,” “her,” “its,” “our”, and “their”. The Examples are as follows:

  • This is my Chair.

  • He forgot his watch.

  • We love our family.

  • They cleaned their Wardrobe.

Thus, the possessive adjectives helps us show the ownership.

What are Articles?

Articles are words used before nouns. English has three articles: a, an, and the. They help us talk about people, places, animals, and things.

Use of A: Use a before a singular countable noun that begins with a consonant sound. The Examples are as follows:

  • a girl

  • a book

  • a car

  • a uniform

Notice that we use “a” with uniform. Since the “uniform” starts with a “yoo” sound.

Use of An: Use "an" before a singular countable noun that begins with a vowel sound. The Examples are as follows:

  • an apple

  • an elephant

  • an orange

  • an hour

However, remember that the sound matters, not just the first letter. We say “an hour” because the "h" is silent.

Use of The: Use "the" when talking about a particular person or thing. It can also be used for something that is already known to the reader or listener. The examples are as follows:

  • The sun gives us light.

  • Please close the door.

  • I saw a dog. The dog was black.

  • The moon looks bright tonight.

In the third example, we use a when we mention the dog for the first time. Then, we use the because we are talking about the same dog.
